According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, Mark Reynolds has agreed to a deal with the Yankees after being released by the Indians earlier in the week. Heyman says that Reynolds selected the Yankees out of four teams that were interested in acquiring his services. For the entirety of the 2013 season the Yankees have been a bit desperate for right-handed power in their lineup. The return of Alex Rodriguez and the acquisition of Alfonso Soriano at the trade deadline have certainly helped that need a bit, but the Yankees are hoping that Reynolds can further solidify their offense from that side of the plate.
Reynolds spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons in Baltimore with the Orioles before signing on with the Cleveland Indians for 2013. Before his release, Reynolds batted .215/.307/.373 with 15 home runs in 99 games. Last season with the O's, Reynolds hit 23 home runs, a step down from his 37 long balls for Baltimore in 2011. He would likely serve as the right-handed platoon partner for Lyle Overbay at first base. Overbay has struggled a bit to hit left-handers this season with a .206/.252/.314 line against them. Reynolds can also play third base in a pinch, but his defense at the hot corner has always left a lot to be desired.
With David Phelps being moved to the 60-day disabled list earlier today to get David Huff onto the 40-man roster, the Yankees will need to clear another spot to make room for Reynolds. Whose time is up?
