Yankees will honor Hideki Matsui on July 28 at Yankee Stadium. He'll sign a 1-day minor league contract and retire as a Yankee.

As I wrote last month, the Yankees will sign Hideki Matsui to a one-day contract in order to allow him to retire as a a member of the team. There weren't a ton of details when the plans were first released, but July 28th was already scheduled to be a Matsui bobblehead giveaway day at the Stadium. Having this one-day deal and retirement ceremony that day fits in with those previously scheduled plans fits pretty well.
In honor of Matsui - who wore uniform No. 55 - the day’s events are to take place on #Yankees’ originally scheduled 55th home game of 2013.

This sounds like it is shaping up to be a game you might want to catch in person if at all possible. Honoring the career of the MVP of the Yankees' most recent World Series championship and one of the most popular Japanese players in MLB with all the fanfare of a one-day contract and ceremony sounds like a fitting end to a great career for Godzilla.
