Oh, hello there baseball.

The Yankees defeated the Braves 8-3 on Saturday, to open their 2013 Spring Training season. As expected for a spring training game, neither team featured their full lineup, and quite a number of players were used by both sides. So let's get to some of the specifics.

  • Robinson Cano went 1 for 3, with the one hit being a home run, off the wonderfully named Yohan Flande, in the fifth inning. The other locked-in every day player to start was Mark Teixeira, who went 0-3, but drove in a run on a ground out in the Yankees four-run fifth inning. Potential starting catcher Francisco Cervelli also started, going 0 for 2 with a walk.
  • Juan Rivera and Matt Diaz, competing for bench spots, also both started, at DH and LF respectively. Rivera went 1-2 with a walk, while Diaz went 0-3.
  • A few prospects also got some time, Zoilo Almonte being the standout performer of that lot. Almonte, starting in right field, threw out Reed Johnson as Johnson tried going to third on Freddie Freeman's single in the first inning. He followed that up with a two-run home run in the third inning. Austin Romine got a chance to stake his claim for the catcher position, going 1-2 at the plate, driving in two runs on a single in the seventh. Slade Heathcott and Tyler Austin got some playing time in the outfield, and a couple at bats, as well.
  • David Phelps started the game for the Yankees. He threw two scoreless innings, allowing three hits. Brett Marshall, Nik Turley, Mikey O'Brien, Kelvin Perez, Branden Pinder, and Chase Whitley finished the game for the Yankees. Marshall and O'Brien allowed the Braves' runs. Marshall gave up one run in the fourth inning, and O'Brien allowed the other two, in the sixth inning.
  • Ramiro Pena played for the Braves. That did not go well for him.

  • The Yankees will play the Blue Jays tomorrow at 1:05 in a game on the YES Network.
