The much-maligned prospect faces another challenge in his quest to reach the majors.
According to Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News, New York Yankees infield prospect David Adams will not be in big league due to a back injury. That's a darn shame too, since he might have had an outside shot at winning a utility job on the big-league roster given his unimpressive competition despite never playing above Triple-A. He's made strides since recovering from a devastating ankle injury that ruptured his 2010 and 2011 as campaigns as well as the proposed Cliff Lee trade with the Seattle Mariners.
I wrote about Adams in the "Know Your 40" series, and his stellar numbers at Double-A and the Arizona Fall League offered promise about this March. The Yankees are trying to make him a third baseman going forward since there are no prospects close to the bigs at that position, and Corban Joseph passed Adams on the second base depth chart last year (for more on CoJo's 2012, see Tanya's post).
Adams was probably going to return to the minors anyway because he's still only played 37 games at third and could use some more experience there if that's where his future lies. Still, it was a nice thought while it lasted that Adams might make the roster. It does seem that he will be ticketed for his first experience at Triple-A Scranton when he recovers from the back injury though. There's no clear third baseman there and he's hit enough at Trenton to earn a promotion.
