In a March 30th exhibition game, the Yankees will take on West Point at 2:00 p.m., marking the 22nd time the clubs have played each other in history. The Yankees have, predictably, never lost the match, though Army narrowly lost in 1966 when Mickey Mantle drove in the game's only run.
After Nick Swisher and Rafael Soriano signed elsewhere, the Yankees currently have the most draft picks in the first round with three. Thanks to a number of expiring contracts and one-year deals, the team is also set to rack up the number of selections they will receive in next year's first round as well. It's a rather smart idea when spending is limited every which way under the new CBA, and the Yankees seem to be playing it right to this point.
Injured? Check. Old? Yep. Both of those things describe Travis Hafner, but because of those things, he may be a decent, inexpensive option for DH at bats until Alex Rodriguez's return mid-season. The Yankees would be spending minimal money to have a guy who may or may not put it together, but if he doesn't, nothing is really lost. It may not be the best idea in the world, but it's certainly not the worst they could do.
Derek Jeter has been cleared to resume baseball activity in his recovery from ankle surgery at the end of last year. He won't actually begin those activities until later this month, but it puts him perfectly on schedule to be ready for Opening Day.
