Yanks Acquire Steve Pearce; Brandon Laird DFA'd
The Yankees just acquired corner-infielder/outfielder Steve Pearce from the Astros for cash. Brandon Laird has been DFA'd to make room for him on the 40-man roster. In case you didn't know (as I didn't), Pearce was part of the AAA Empire State Yankees at the beginning of the year, hitting .318/.419/.568. The Yankees traded him to the Orioles for cash earlier this year. He was later claimed by the Astros when he was DFA'd by the Orioles. He played 49 games this year with the Orioles and Astros hitting .254/.347/.349. It looks like the Yankees are just trying to acquire additional depth at the corner infield & outfield spots, and I expect him to wind up back in AAA. This is certainly a bad sign for Brandon Laird.
