Yankees signed Kosuke Fukudome to a minor league contract and he is expected to report to AAA Empire State. Fukudome was released by the Chicago White Sox after hitting .171/.294/.195 in 24 games before he hit the DL with back spasms and was released. Hopefully this is just an insurance move and not indicative of them knowing bad news about Brett Gardner's return.
Draft picks Jose Mesa Jr. and Charlie Haslup also agreed to terms with the Yankees this afternoon ahead of the approaching deadline. Mesa was drafted in the 24th round out of high school in Florida and Haslup was taken in the 26th round out of the University of Maryland. Both players are big right-handed pitchers with promising arm strength, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. Callis thinks the Yankees are likely done at this point, but unless these two used up all the remaining money, there is still time for a few more deals to get done before 5 p.m.
