One person I really have not heard mentioned for the outfield is Melky Cabrera. After thinking about it, I see little downfall besides the publicity. The Yankees have handled that type of publicity well over the years though.

Some key points about Melky

-- Above average right fielder

-- Switch hitter is great for the lineup

--Good OBP

--Good power

--In his prime

--Knows NY and has friends on the team

--Can likely be signed for low $$

Lets compare him to Ichiro

--Defense - advantage Ichiro - but Melky not a liability

--Speed - advantage Ichiro - but Melky above average

--Batting - advantage Melky all around, avg, OBP, power, swtich hitter

--Cost - advantage Melky. From reports I have seen they estimate Melky in the 4-5 million range for 1 year. Ichiro would be 8-10 million.

--Fit in the lineup - Advantage Melky. A high average, switch hitter, some power, some speed, low strikeouts and can hit about anywhere (likely 1, 2, 7,8,9). Ichiro gives less production, less flexibility and could hit probably 1,2,9.

The only thing I can see is off the field, not on. The publicity would be one thing but the projected extra $$$ that Ichiro brings in could be a factor as well.

Some may be concerned that Melky's production will fall way off. I disagree. Even if you look at his Royal stats (which I presume he was tested throughout the year) they are still better than Ichiro (Melky's KC stats 201 hits, 305 avg, 18 HR, 87 RBI, .339 OBP.) Then factor in Yankee Lineup and the stadium would increase his power and RBI totals. He could potentially be close to Swisher's stats in HR and RBIs.

So looking at it, why not take a shot with Melky? He is just coming into his prime, better than Ichiro and half the price. I would offer him 1 year for 4-5 million and a club option for a 2nd year at 7 or 8 million. If he does well, he is still a bargain the second year.
