The Yankees are off today but postseason baseball has arrived in the form of a one-game playoff to decide which teams will take on the respective #1 seeds in the American and National league.

In the first game, the 94-win Braves will send Kris Medlen to the mound against the 88-win Cardinals and Kyle Lohse. With Medlen's record of success this season and all the warm feelings surrounding Chipper Jones' farewell tour, it is hard to not view the Braves as the favorite in this game.

The second game is of more relevance to Yankee fans, as the winner will host the Bronx Bombers for the first two games of the ALDS starting on Sunday. The Orioles have tapped Joe Saunders for the start, while the Rangers will turn to Yu Darvish. Baltimore hung tight with the Yankees for the final month of the season, forcing the AL East to come down to the final day, while Texas was busy blowing a huge lead that allowed the Oakland Athletics to take the AL West crown in game 162 by completing a sweep in the final series of the year.

It's a little strange that three teams playing today have 93 or more wins and their seasons will come down to one winner-take-all game, thanks to the new postseason formatting. On one hand, it's kind of exciting. On the other, I couldn't be happier that my favorite team doesn't have to participate in that kind of nonsense.
