World Series Game 4 Open Thread

Matt Cain. - Ezra Shaw

The Giants try to complete the NL's first sweep in 22 years tonight.

The last time the World Series ended in a National League sweep was in 1990, when the Cincinnati Reds stunned the defending champion Oakland Athletics in four straight. The San Francisco Giants have a chance to do that tonight to the Detroit Tigers, who of course just completed their own sweep of the New York Yankees in the ALCS. Matt Cain pitches against Max Scherzer with the Commissioner's Trophy in the building at Comerica Park tonight, waiting to potentially be awarded.

If the Giants do finish the job, Pablo Sandoval is likely the World Series MVP favorite. He had the three-homer game in the opener, two of which came against "unbeatable" Justin Verlander, and is 7-for-11 in the series so far (.636/.667/1.545). If MLB wants to be weird and give it to a reliever though, Tim Lincecum has thrown 4.2 nearly-perfect innings with eight strikeouts, and Sergio Romo has two saves. Me? I'd give it to the everyday player, but John Wetteland (2.08 ERA in 4.1 innings, four saves) took the '96 World Series MVP over Cecil Fielder (.391/.440/.478), so who knows? Since there are only three games of data to work with, things could change.

The Giants last swept a World Series in 1954, back when they played at the Polo Grounds across the river from Yankee Stadium. Even if the Tigers win tonight, it should be noted that no World Series team trailing 3-0 in the series has ever even forced a Game 6 in the 108-year history of the Fall Classic.

Do you want a longer series simply to prolong the baseball season since we won't have any until March, or do you want to see 'Frisco finish the job? Either way, feel free to talk about the World Series, NFL Football Sunday, or your Hurricane Sandy preparation plans.
