David Butler II-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire
David Phelps is replacing Ivan Nova for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.
Good news: With the next three games being of utmost importance for the Yankees, the team has decided to give Ivan Nova's last start, scheduled for tomorrow, to David Phelps instead. Nova has really struggled all season except for his brilliant June, but they really couldn't have felt too good about starting him with the division title on the line.
Phelps has performed admirably this season despite being kind of shuffled around between rotation, bullpen, and even AAA. If we're going with who seems like they might give the Yankees the best chance tomorrow between he and Nova, it would be difficult to argue against giving Phelps the nod. It will be interesting to see where this leaves Nova in the pecking order for the postseason roster. He really hasn't deserved to overthrow Phelps as the long man, making his inclusion on the roster at all kind of pointless.
As for tonight, Mark Teixeira returns to the lineup against Clay Buchholz. The lineup without Jones or Ibanez looks the best it has in maybe more than a month. Boston's lineup doesn't feature Jacoby Ellsbury or Dustin Pedroia. If the Yankees can't win tonight, it will be a huge disappointment.
New York: Jeter SS, Ichiro LF, A-Rod DH, Cano 2B, Teixeira 1B, Swisher RF, Grandy CF, Martin C, Chavez 3B
Boston: Ciriaco 2B, Nava LF, Ross RF, Gomez 1B, Lavarnway DH, Salty C, Valencia 3B, Lin CF, Iglesias SS
