For those of you that don't understand the title, the Yankees bullpen was fantastic tonight. The Red Sox defeated the Yankees 7-4 in 14 innings, thanks to the Yankees bringing in arguably the worst pitcher in baseball, Scott Proctor.
Simply put, Girardi did not seem to manage for the win in this one, but instead to preserve the health of his players. That cost the Yankees their chances to take the lead, and it cost the Rays their chances at tying the wild card race.
Scott Proctor came into the game in the top of the 14th inning (Pena walked out onto the mound after Girardi was ejected, but the move was likely Girardi's call) and gave up a line drive single, a walk, a monster fly out, and a three run home run. Hilariously enough, though, he did strike out Carl Crawford.
Thanks to the folks that came to the threads tonight, and sorry to the Rays fans out there. The Yankees tried for seven innings, then they saved their health.
