Freddy Garcia, who has talked about how much he wants to play for the Yankees all off-season, has reached an agreement with the Yankees. The minor league deal was first reported by Jerry Crasnick, who also has the contract details -
Freddy Garcia gets a $1.5M salary with $3.6M in possible incentives based on starts. Tops out at 30 starts.
Garcia, a 6-foot 4-inch, 250 lb. RHP, last pitched for the White Sox in 2010, tallying a 12-6 record with a 4.64 ERA in 28 starts. The Venezuelan only struck out 89 hitters, however, and walked 45. Garcia pitched to a 1.38 WHIP.
He will join the competition for the fourth or fifth starter spot, along with Ivan Nova, Sergio Mitre, Bartolo Colon, and the kids. At this point Garcia should be considered the favorite to win the no. 5 job, with Nova the no. 4.
It is questionable whether or not this has any affect on Andy Pettitte, but it certainly affects Nova, who now has stronger competition for a starter's spot.
Garcia, 34, is nicknamed "The Chief."
